Program Description

The IDEAS Foundations of Quality Improvement provides participants with the knowledge and tools to effectively participate in and contribute to quality improvement projects within or across health care organizations.  Using an evidence based curriculum and instructional design, the IDEAS Foundations of Quality Improvement Program is comprised of a mandatory three-hour online component completed prior to a one-day in-person workshop.

Program Outline

Customized for the Ontario health system context, the IDEAS Foundations of Quality Improvement Program provides introductory knowledge and skills in quality improvement principles, methods and tools. Taught by expert faculty who are experienced in quality improvement, the Foundations Program will help you gain practical QI knowledge or refresh the knowledge you already have.

During the program, you will gain an understanding of the following:

  • Foundations of quality improvement with an emphasis on the Model for Improvement
  • Basic quality improvement tools and methods
  • Team engagement and resilience
  • Writing a project charter
  • Change concepts, change ideas and testing change
  • Run charts and introduction to data analysis

Program participants are drawn from across all disciplines and sectors, creating a rich atmosphere for collaborative learning and networking.

Learner Outcomes

After successful completion of the e-learning module and in-person workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of quality improvement for healthcare
  • Explain a quality improvement aim in accordance with the Model for Improvement
  • Explain the application of measurement in accordance with the Model for Improvement
  • Collaborate with interprofessional team members to contribute effectively on a quality improvement team
