Program Description

This program has been designed to maximize direct hands-on time utilizing actual devices employed in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and diagnostic procedures. The program will consist of four days of hands-on experience and exposure to the latest technology.

Hands-on sessions will include minimally invasive surgery and advanced endoscopic procedures for benign esophageal diseases, endobronchial ultrasound, VATS lobectomy, robotic surgery, navigational bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, airway and esophageal stent insertion and percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy.

Target Audiences

Incoming thoracic surgery residents and fellows starting their training at a Canadian university

Learning Objectives

After active engagement in this program, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate the basic principles of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) for both convex and radial probe
  • Describe the applications and limitations of EBUS-TBNA
  • Perform a successful EBUS-TBNA
  • Discuss the role of thoracic ultrasound for management of pleural effusion
  • Describe the advantages and technical considerations during VATS lobectomy
  • Demonstrate the basic techniques of robotic thoracic surgery
  • Demonstrate the basic technique of airway and vascular anastomosis
  • Define the role of advanced bronchoscopy in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer
  • Describe the physiology of central airway obstruction and how it can be modified by various endoscopic therapies
  • Describe the technique for anti-reflux surgery and hiatus hernia repair
