2018-19 CBDMINICONF - Mini-Conferences for 2019-20 CBD Implementation Planning
Program Description
Several programs at the University of Toronto have implemented the Royal College’s Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) model, Competence By Design (CBD), into their curricula as part of a cultural shift to this style of evaluation. In addition to those programs that have implemented CBD nationally (i.e. full launch), many programs were selected locally to implement components of CBD (i.e. partial launch) to build capacity, test out what works and determine where improvements can be made.
Our team at Postgraduate Medical Education, University of Toronto, is providing curriculum development and assessment systems support to those programs on-ramping to CBD (whether in partial or full) in 2019-20. We will be meeting regularly with Program Directors, Administrators and CBD Leads during the 2018-19 academic year to plan for 2019-20 implementation (see below for details).
Following each mini-conference, programs – with the support of our Post MD team — will be expected to complete their CBD implementation activities before the next mini-conference to ensure their readiness for implementation.

Each mini-conference will be approximately 2 hours in duration and will be broken up into the following three sections:
- CBD/CBME Implementation Progress & Systems Updates
- Introduction to relevant CBD implementation activities
- Break-out sessions for Program Directors to begin working on implementation activities in groups
- Dedicated question and answer period
There will be two identical date and time offerings for each mini-conference. Representation from each program, in particular for those programs that are fully launching in 2019-20, is required unless alternate arrangements have been arranged/agreed upon with the Post MD CBD team. If a Program Director is not able to attend, please arrange for a delegate to attend in their place. Program Administrators are strongly encouraged to attend, but their attendance is not mandatory.
The primary target audience for these sessions are Program Directors, Program Coordinators/Administrators and CBME/CBD Leads.
